How Can I Get a Mobility Scooter Covered by Medicare?

Here are the steps to follow if you want to get a mobility scooter covered by Medicare:

  • Check if you qualify for Medicare Part B. If you're 65 years or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident for at least five consecutive years, you may qualify for Medicare Part B, which covers medical services and supplies necessary to treat your medical condition, including power-operated scooters and manual wheelchairs.

  • Get a face-to-face appointment and a written prescription from a doctor before Medicare considers paying for your scooter.

  • Purchase your scooter from a qualified DME supplier that accepts the assignment cost from the federal government if you qualify for Part B. Your DME supplier and your doctor must be enrolled in Medicare for you to qualify for a fully covered scooter.

  • Verify that your DME supplier and doctor are enrolled in Medicare before purchasing your scooter.

  • Ask your DME supplier if they participate in Medicare before getting DME. If they're participating suppliers, they must accept assignment. If they're enrolled in Medicare but aren't "participating," they may choose not to accept assignment.

  • Pay 20% of the amount approved by Medicare if your DME provider is willing to work with your insurance and accept the assignment costs. The Part B deductible will apply to the remaining amount.

  • Find decent scooters anywhere from $750 - $2,000 online if you're not qualified for Part B. E-commerce sites such as Parentgiving.com offer a massive selection of mobility scooters at reasonable prices.

  • Determine if you're subject to Medicare's Competitive Bidding Program depending on where you live. Medicare's DMEPOS competitive bidding program can change the amount Medicare would typically pay for a scooter.

  • Consider switching to a Medicare contract supplier if your current supplier decides not to become a grandfathered supplier. That way you won't have to pay more than 20% of the full value of the scooter.

At American Mobility Specialists, we offer a wide range of mobility devices to customers who are eligible for Medicare health benefits. If you're a senior who suffers from mobility issues, you may qualify for a scooter that Medicare can help pay for if you meet the right requirements.

Medicare Part B covers medical services and supplies necessary to treat your medical condition, including power-operated scooters and manual wheelchairs.

You're automatically eligible for a motorized scooter if you're covered by Part B, but before Medicare considers paying for your scooter, you must have a face-to-face appointment and a written prescription from a doctor.

If you qualify for Part B, you need to purchase a scooter from a qualified DME supplier that accepts the assignment cost from the federal government. Both your DME supplier and your doctor must be enrolled in Medicare for you to qualify for a fully covered scooter. We recommend verifying their enrollment.

One of the most pertinent concerns for most seniors is the amount they will have to pay out of pocket for a scooter. If your DME provider is willing to work with your insurance and accept the assignment costs, you'll have to pay 20% of the amount approved by Medicare. The Part B deductible will apply to the remaining amount.

We offer a wide selection of mobility scooters at reasonable prices, and each order is backed by a top-of-the-line customer support team that will aid you through the ordering process.

If you don't qualify for Part B, you can still purchase a mobility scooter conveniently online. Our e-commerce site offers a massive selection of mobility scooters at reasonable prices. Electric mobility scooters are available in three types: travel mobility scooters, 3 wheel mobility scooters, and 4 wheel mobility scooters.

We are unable to accept Medicare, Medicaid or insurance payments, but we are dedicated to helping you find the scooter you need to reclaim your mobility. Contact us today to learn more about our mobility devices and how we can help you stay on the move.
